Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries, and defects involving the mouth, jaw, teeth, neck, and face. They are trained to perform a variety of functions including wisdom tooth removal, jaw reconstruction, tooth extraction, facial trauma surgery, and dental implants. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons also repair facial abnormalities with cosmetic surgery.
Treatment of Facial Injury
It is important to follow the post-operative instructions given by your dentist or oral surgeon to ensure proper healing.
It’s also important to note that, in some cases, it might be recommended to keep the wisdom teeth if they are not causing any problems and are properly aligned. The dentist or oral surgeon will advise you on whether extraction is necessary, or if it is better to keep the wisdom teeth.
Fractures
Fractures of the facial bones (such as the nose, cheekbones, or jaw) may require surgery to realign the bones and restore normal function.
Lacerations
Cuts or tears in the skin may require sutures (stitches) to close the wound and prevent infection.
Dental Injuries
Injuries to the teeth or jaw may require treatment by an endodontist, oral surgeon, or orthodontist.
Eye Injuries:
Injuries to the eye or surrounding structures may require treatment by an ophthalmologist.
Concussion
A blow to the head may cause a concussion, which requires rest and observation, and in some cases, medication.
